In the silence of the night forest, Prince Ivan flees with his beloved Elena on the back of the Grey Wolf , his faithful ally and guide. The black background amplifies the magic of the moment, while the bright colors emerge like apparitions in the heart of the forest. It is an image of escape and protection, where love and courage find an unexpected guardian in the wild.

THE PAINTING

The scene depicts an episode from the Russian fairy tale ofIvan Tsarevich andHelena the Beautiful , led by the faithfulGrey Wolf through the forest. The three figures form a compact nucleus, organized according to a pyramidal structure that lends stability and harmony to the whole. The wolf , arranged in an ascending diagonal, introduces a measured movement that crosses the scene without breaking its tranquility. Its elongated body acts as a dynamic base, while the figures of Ivan and Helena merge in a protective gesture. The space is defined by overlapping planes. The foreground of vegetation—rendered with minute and precious details—introduces depth, while the forest in the background appears as a stylized theatrical backdrop. The central tree reinforces the verticality and stabilizes the composition, framing the action in a quiet, intimate setting. The lacquered black background enhances the brilliance of the colors: the cool blues and deep greens of the landscape interact with the warm reds and ochres of the clothes. The sharp contours and subtle gilding—applied to the ornamental details and floral frame—punctuate the surface with graphic precision, in the tradition of the Palekh School . The overall effect conveys a strong symbolism: the passage through the forest as an initiatory journey, where the wild strength of the wolf becomes a guide and protection.
