THE FAIRY TALE

The youngest daughter of the Sea King lives in the depths, among coral gardens and azure silence. She is different from her sisters: she dreams not only of the surface, but also longs to understand the world of men and the mystery of the immortal soul. When she is allowed to rise to the surface, she witnesses a storm and saves a young prince from a shipwreck. She brings him to shore and, hidden, watches him awaken: from that moment, she falls madly in love with him. To stay with him, she turns to the sea witch : in exchange for a potion that will give her human legs, she must give up her voice —the sweetest in the kingdom—and accept that every step will be painful for her. If the prince does not love her and choose her as his bride, at the dawn of his wedding to another, she will dissolve into sea foam. On land, mute and fragile, she wins the prince 's affection, but not his love. When he chooses another woman as his bride, the Little Mermaid is offered one last chance: to save herself by killing him. But she cannot: she loves him too much. At dawn, as the sun rises over the sea, her body dissolves. Yet she does not disappear: because of the purity of her heart, she becomes a spirit of the air, destined to gain an immortal soul through kindness and good works.

" The Little Mermaid teaches that true love is not possession, but gift. Desire can push us beyond our limits, but it is the ability to give up that defines the greatness of the soul. Even when it is not reciprocated, love that chooses good elevates the soul and makes it greater than the loss."
