Against a black background, this Kholuy miniature captures the culminating moment of the aerial duel between the knight Ruslan and the sorcerer Chernomor, a celebrated episode from Pushkin's poem Ruslan and Ludmila. Suspended in mid-air for his beloved's salvation, Ruslan's figure transforms the sky into a theatre of action: a timeless challenge between the light of courage and the shadow of magic.

THE PAINTING

At the centre of the composition, the imposing figure of the knight Ruslan stands out, soaring upwards as he firmly grasps the sorcerer's very long beard. Ruslan is depicted in armour with golden reflections and an orange cloak fluttering in the wind; his proud and determined pose culminates in his raised arm, drawing his sword, ready to sever the source of his opponent's magic. Above him, almost upside down in the void, Chernomor desperately tries to escape his grasp: his grotesque green face, angry expression, and turquoise and red garments create a strong and dramatic chromatic contrast. The golden beard, drawn with extremely fine, winding lines, wraps around the hero, becoming the visual and conceptual pivot of the entire painting. In the background, the night sky is torn by dark, swirling clouds, typical of the Kholuy style, while in the lower left, the silvery and fairytale-like silhouette of a castle can be seen. The landscape is completed at the bottom by a thin crescent moon, illuminating this deadly dance suspended among the stars.
