"Vasilisa the Beautiful"

At the center of the composition stands the figure of Vasilisa, painted with elongated and sinuous lines, typical of Palekh painting. She wears traditional clothing (a sarafan and a headscarf); her pose expresses cautious grace as she clutches the faithful magical doll, her mother's gift guiding her through dangers. The stark contrast between the bright tones of her garments and the surrounding darkness accentuates her purity, making her a focal point of light in the narrative. To the left, the Red Rider bursts into the scene, riding a fire-colored steed with a golden, flaming mane. This figure, symbolizing Day and the rising Sun, is full of dynamism: it seems to leap out of the dense vegetation, illuminating the clearing and chasing away the shadows. On the opposite side, in a temporal transition, the Black Rider moves on a dark steed that blends with the forest. He represents Night and advances with a calm and mysterious step under a thin golden crescent moon that shines in the lacquer sky. All around, nature frames the scene: birches and pines fade from brilliant green to gold and red, creating a magical and timeless atmosphere. The ground is embellished with very fine golden volutes simulating the undergrowth.
